Marquette University was initially started as a college on August 28th, 1881 by John Martin Henny. It was funded by a Belgian businessman Guillaume Joseph DeBuey. It was named after Father Jacques Marquette, a missionary and explorer back in the 17th century. Its main aim was to provide a Catholic foundation that provides Catholic education at an affordable cost mainly to the immigrant population of Germany. The university first gave the graduation degree for Bachelor of Arts to five students in the year 1887. In the early 1890’s, the university appointed some Scholars and Master’s as teaching faculty. It officially became an university in the year 1907 after affiliation with the local medical school. It is a private coeducational university located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It follows the motto ‘Numen Flumenque Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam’ which means ‘God and the River for the greater glory of God’. Being an university, it is organized into 11 schools and colleges at the main campus (Milwaukee) in various fields related to Arts, Business, Engineering and other major fields of study.
